Over the last few decades, the population of Carteret County has grown immensely. Along with the influx of people that have decided to call Carteret County home, came the children. Yet, the amount of affordable activities for our youth and families has not grown at the same rate. We need more things to help shape our youth for the world they will enter into when they become adults. We also need ways for them to go and just be kids for a while. It is equally important that there are activities that allow their parents to be part of that also.
One of the ways to improve the availability of these activities, is to promote sports for the youth through the Carteret County Parks and Recreations Department. We have been seeing a growth in the amount of our youth that are getting involved in sports. Our current Parks and Recreation system can be expanded to offer more opportunities and promote awareness of what is available. We can also build parks and create businesses for extreme sports. All of which can be enjoyed by the entire family.
Another option is summer camps, ranging from one day outings to week long camps. They can offer many of the activities that have long made Carteret County a great place to grow up. Things like canoeing, swimming, fishing, hiking, sports, arts and crafts, science and nature events, and much more.
As your County Commissioner and a father, I will work to bring new opportunities and ideas to our area to expand the activities available to our youth and families.
